Why shouldn’t Jose Mourinho be a success if he took over at Manchester United?

Old Trafford needs a lift and he would get them winning games again. He is capable of getting them in the hunt for trophies.

Unless they can get Pep Guardiola, United might feel they can’t afford to miss out on Mourinho. People say he isn’t a good fit for them but he played attacking football at Real Madrid and in the first half of last season.

And United’s reputation for bringing kids through is at least in part based on luck.

Fergie played the Class of ’92 because they were outstanding players. It happened to me at West Ham — you feel very lucky if you have even one kid coming through, let alone half a dozen.

If Mourinho had the same players, he would have done the same. None of Chelsea’s young players were good enough when he was there — the ones with the promising reputations, like Josh McEachran for example, haven’t gone on elsewhere and done really well.
