Harry Redknapp: England not to blame for our slump

Harry Redknapp today dismissed claims that Tottenham’s recent slump is the result of him being linked with the vacant England job.

The club have won only once in five League games since Fabio Capello quit at the beginning of February and Redknapp was installed as the people’s choice to replace the Italian.

However, Redknapp described the notion that speculation over his future had distracted the players at White Hart Lane as “absolute nonsense” and pointed to the difficulty of Spurs’ recent fixtures.

“Tough games, tough games,” he said. “Arsenal away, Man United at home, Everton away, three very, very tough fixtures. In all honesty you’d probably have taken three points from those games. We got none.”

Spurs must arrest the slump if they are to claim a place in next season’s Champions League. They are five points ahead of tomorrow’s lunchtime opponents, Chelsea, having surrendered previously healthy leads over the Blues and Arsenal.

“It’s a big game for us for sure,” said Redknapp. “We’ve got a lead over Chelsea but we’ve got to maintain that lead. It’s going to be tight getting down to the end of the season. The Champions League places are all up for grabs now.

“It’s just closed up. From being 10 points clear we’re now only five points clear of Chelsea now. From being 10 points clear of Arsenal we’re suddenly behind Arsenal by a point.

“It’s not been ideal. Arsenal have been on an incredible run of winning games. We’ve struggled to pick up results the last few weeks.”
