Vincent Janssen's arrival at Tottenham will spur Harry Kane on to improve even further this season, according to former Spurs striker Clive Allen.

Kane has been Mauricio Pochettino's undisputed first-choice centre forward since he broke into the team and scored 25 Premier League goals to win the Golden Boot award last term.

The 23-year-old's role is not expected to change this season but, for the first time, he faces competition from Janssen, who signed a four-year contract at White Hart Lane earlier this summer.

Janssen has already spoken of his desire to play regularly in his first season in English football and Allen is adamant the Dutchman will help to bring out the best in Kane.

“Harry will benefit from [Vincent] Janssen coming to the club, no question,” Allen told the Mirror.

“For a start, it will give the manager Mauricio Pochettino another option if he feels Harry needs a break.

"And just as importantly, it will be competition for Harry. If he feels his place is under threat, it's bound to add something to his game.

"I know I felt like that and I am sure most players do - that if someone comes in and does well in your position, you know you may have to fight to get back in the team," Allen added.

Kane endured a disappointing summer with England as he failed to score at Euro 2016 before Roy Hodgson's side were dumped out of the competition by Iceland.

But he returned to form for Spurs with a brace in the north Londoners' emphatic 6-1 victory over Inter Milan and Allen believes Kane's confidence will not be knocked by England's failure.

“As for any lasting effect from the Euros, no, I don't think there will be for Harry.

"You have to remember how he had to battle to establish himself at Spurs in the first place.

“He was going out on loan everywhere before he got his chance - and he took it really well,” Allen insisted.
