Harry Kane: I would be very, very surprised if a Tottenham player chose to move to China

Harry Kane insists no Tottenham player would be tempted to swap White Hart Lane for the riches of the Chinese Super League.

The wealth on offer at some of China’s clubs outstrips what is available in the Premier League, with Chelsea forward Diego Costa apparently unsettled by a £30m-a-year offer from Tianjin Quanjian.

The Super League clubs would love to snare Kane or Dele Alli but the England striker told them they would be wasting their time.

He said: “I would be very, very surprised if any of our players go off to China, especially within the next couple of seasons. We have something great going on here and it would be silly not to be a part of it.

“Players will choose what they want to choose. Some are going to go there and earn some good money, but a lot of players will stay. The ambition is to win the Premier League and other trophies, and play in the best league in the world.

“I think that drives most players so I don’t think it’s that much of an issue. Chinese football is trying to do all it can to make their league as good as ours, and you can’t fault them for that. But I definitely think the ambition to win the Premier League will drive players more, especially young ones.”

Like many of his team-mates, Kane signed a new contract at Tottenham earlier this season. The deal, which lasts until 2022, could eventually be worth about £120,000 per week.

That is less than a number of the best Premier League players earn but Kane said: “You can see how good a shape the club is in. The future is very bright. In Mauricio Pochettino we have one of the best managers in the world, if not the best.

“I’m pretty sure he would stay [if a Chinese club tried to hire him]. He has started a project here, we’ve got the new stadium on the way. After performances like the one against West Brom (Spurs won 4-0), the next step is to win trophies.

“Hopefully we can do that this season and push ourselves on to the world scale.”
