Harry Kane spoke of his love of scoring for England as he earned his country a 1-1 draw against Germany and in doing so brought up his 50th international goal.

The England captain won and then scored a late penalty in Munich to help the Three Lions avoid back-to-back Nations League defeats, following Saturday’s disappointing display against Hungary.

It was a spot-kick that brought up the half century in an England shirt for Kane, who is just the second man to reach that mark. He is now only three goals behind Wayne Rooney’s all-time record.

“Really nice feeling [to score],” Kane told Channel 4.

“I had a couple of chances earlier, the first one was over the bar and Manuel Neuer made a good save for the second. We kept going and played our best football in the last half an hour. Good to get the goal and a shame not to nick it at the end.

“I love scoring goals, I have always loved it especially for my country. Whenever I can help the team I am glad to do that.”

An important night on a personal note for Kane was also a crucial one for England, ensuring they can go into the upcoming home matches against Italy and Hungary with their spirits boosted after battling to earn a point.

Gareth Southgate’s side have just four games, including those two Nations League matches this week, to go until the World Cup gets underway later this year and Kane believes the team’s showing in Munich was an important step on the road to Qatar.

“It is really important to show the mentality, 1-0 behind we showed good character to get back into the game and get a result,” Kane said.

“We are playing against a very good Germany side. We still have important matches but the World Cup will be here before we know it.”
