Graeme Souness is to step down as a Sky Sport pundit.

The former Liverpool captain made the announcement live on air following Liverpool’s dramatic win over Tottenham on Sunday.

Souness, who has been working as an analyst on the platform for 15 years, fought back the tears as he confirmed the news to presenter Kelly Cates.

He was treated to a round of applause by Cates, Jamie Redknapp and Robbie Keane in the studio after calling an end to his long career.

The Scotsman began working for Sky after leaving his last managerial job at Newcastle in 2006.

"I was given an opportunity to do this and it was magnificent," said Souness as he reflected on his time at Sky Sports. "It has just been the most fantastic time for me.

"I love football, l care about football and l worry about it going forward, but in Sky’s hands it is in good hands, it is in safe hands."
