Give us some respect, say Ghana

11 April 2012

Stephen Appiah has accused Fabio Capello of insulting Ghana by resting five senior players for England's friendly against the Africans tonight.

The former Ghana captain, who will be at Wembley as a guest of his country's Football Association, cannot believe first-choice skipper John Terry and Wayne Rooney have been allowed to return to Chelsea and Manchester United respectively.

Ghana, who are ranked 16th in the world, have travelled all the way from Congo having played an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier there on Sunday and will be backed by 21,000 supporters.

When asked if England had shown a lack of respect by fielding a weakened team, he told the BBC: "I think so, yes. Some Ghanaians are really sad they are not going to play. It's like they are underrating the game.

"A lot of Ghanaians have travelled from America, Canada, from around the world. It's a dream come true. It's huge, it's big and Ghanaians are going to follow the match.

"Ghanaians are disappointed. They really wanted to see those players. The players wish they could play against Terry. It's their dream to play against Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard and all these players. Maybe some of them will not play in that stadium again."

Capello is set to make at least seven changes to the team that beat Wales in a European Championship qualifier on Saturday.

Sunderland's Danny Welbeck was today called up as cover for Aaron Lennon, who was sent back to Spurs last night with a hamstring strain.
