Standard Sport assesses the individual performances from Germany’s 1-0 extra-time win over Argentina in the World Cup final in Rio.

A tight game was deservedly won by Germany, with substitute Mario Gotze volleying home in the 113th minute.

Both teams missed gilt-edged chances in the first-half, with Gonzalo Higuain firing wide for Argentina when clean through, and Benedikt Howedes heading against the post from six yards.

Lionel Messi was inches away from putting the South Americans ahead in the second half, before Andre Schurrle and Rodrigo Palacio went close to finding the winner in the first half of extra time.

It was left to Gotze to volley home in the 113th minute to secure Germany’s fourth World Cup, and ensure a European side won the tournament on Latin American soil for the first time ever.
