Tottenham have completed the signing of Benfica midfielder Gedson Fernandes.

The Portuguese midfielder becomes Tottenham's first signing of the January transfer window and the first signing of the Jose Mourinho era in north London, with the 21-year-old joining on an initial 18-month loan deal.

Spurs have the option to make the deal permanent for around £55millon the summer of 2021.

Fernandes opted for Spurs over a move to West Ham while Manchester United were also linked earlier this month.

He could make his Spurs debut away to Watford on Saturday.

Mourinho has been eager to bring in midfield cover with Moussa Sissoko sidelined until April.

Record signing Tanguy Ndombele has also struggled with injuries during his first season in English football.

Mourinho also wants to bring in cover up front for the second half of the season following the loss of Harry Kane.

Like Sissoko, the England international will be sidelined until April after picking up a hamstring injury on New Year's Day.
