Swansea manager Garry Monk believes Thibaut Courtois was rightly sent off in his side's 2-2 opening-day draw with Chelsea on Saturday.

The Welsh side snatched a point off the Premier League champions at Stamford Bridge after Bafetimbi Gomis converted a 55th-minute penalty, which had been awarded for Courtois' foul on the striker just inside the area.

Following the Belgian's dismissal, Asmir Begovic was sent on to try and stop Gomis from restoring parity but he dived the wrong way as the Swansea forward drove the ball into the right-side of the goal.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho refused to speak about Courtois' sending off after the match, but Monk revealed he thought the referee was right to have given the shot-stopper his marching orders.

"It is what it is. I think the referee got it right," Monk said.

"Bafe would have a goal-scoring opportunity had the keeper not come out at that point so it’s definitely a penalty and red card."

The Premier League holders started the match at Stamford Bridge in bright fashion after Oscar gave the hosts the lead with his well-taken free-kick.

But the Swans hit back and equalised through summer signing Andre Ayew before Willian's set-piece, which looped in off defender Federico Fernandez, looked set to give the Blues an opening-day win.

However, Gomis' penalty denied Chelsea all three points and Mourinho's side now face a tough trip to Manchester City next Sunday as they aim to retain their league crown this season.
