Gareth Southgate has given England "stability" during his temporary spell in charge of the senior team, according to Adam Lallana.

Southgate was handed the role on an interim basis in the wake of Sam Allardyce's exit and has led the Three Lions to seven points from a possible nine after tonight's 3-0 victory over Scotland.

Gordon Strachan's side produced a spirited performance but England were clinical in front of goal and edged out their old rivals thanks to headers from Daniel Sturridge, Lallana and Gary Cahill.

England are now on course to qualify for the 2018 World Cup and Lallana has praised Southgate for the impact he has made in a relatively short period of time.

"He's given good stability," Lallana told ITV. "He hasn't had much time to work with us but I guess that's the case as an international manager.

"You only get the lads a few times a year but it's not in our hands. We just go out onto the pitch and do as well as we can for our country and tonight was a god three points.

"It wasn't as comfortable as we would have liked [against Scotland]. We started very sloppily. But second half we got the goals at the right times," he added.

Sturridge was chosen to lead the front line ahead of both Jamie Vardy and Harry Kane and vindicated his selection with the opening goal.

The 27-year-old, who has struggled for game time at club level of late, is convinced patience was key to the Three Lions' success.

"Every game we go out there and we try to play our football.

"We were unlucky in the last game not to break them down. Today we carried on playing the same football but were more patient.

"In the end we wore them down and deserved the result," Sturridge added.
