Harry Redknapp believes that Gareth Bale and David Bentley are on course to prove they deserve to stay at White Hart Lane.

Bale has had a stop-start career since joining for £5million from Tottenham in 2007.

However, Redknapp feels the former Southampton defender is performing as well as any other left-back in the country, ensuring that Benoit Assou-Ekoto faces a battle to win back his place when he returns from injury.

Midfielder Bentley has struggled to get a game since his £15m move from Blackburn in 2008 but impressed in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Birmingham, having scored against Fulham in the previous match.

Redknapp said: "I'm so pleased for Gareth — he has stepped in there and been fantastic. His defensive side of his game is stronger and he has learned that. He's looking like the player we all thought he was when he was a kid.

"I've also been pleased with David. He's played two games last week after being out of the picture. He's here and he's got lots of ability."
