Arsenal were dealt a blow after Gabriel Martinelli injured himself in the warm-up against Newcastle.

The forward, who has only just returned to the side following a serious knee injury, went down during a drill ahead of the Gunners’ FA Cup third round tie at Emirates Stadium after rolling his ankle.

Martinelli had to be helped to his feet by two physios and the Brazilian looked in some pain and distressed as he headed down the tunnel for more treatment.

Arsenal confirmed soon after that the 19-year-old “turned his ankle” and was replaced in the line-up by Reiss Nelson, who had previously been selected to be on the bench.

The Gunners will hope Martinelli’s injury is not serious as he has been a bright spark since returning to the side.

The Brazilian has reinvigorated Arsenal’s stagnant attack and Mikel Arteta has been glowing about his influence on the team.

Arsenal elected not to risk Martinelli against Newcastle and he was removed from the line-up as a precaution.
