Fulham make late bid to sign Peter Crouch

London bound? Fulham hope Crouch wants to stay in the south

Fulham hope to hijack Sunderland's move for England striker Peter Crouch after matching Portsmouth's £12million valuation.

Talks will be held at Craven Cottage today and it is thought the former Tottenham trainee favours staying close to London. However, Fulham are only prepared to pay him £45,000 a-week, which equals top earner Andy Johnson's salary, while Sunderland will match the £70,000 a-week he currently earns.

Fulham boss Roy Hodgson said: "Crouch is a player we're interested in - but, there again, so are a number of others."

Crouch was at Sunderland yesterday and boss Steve Bruce said: "Location is probably the big thing in it but we have done all we can."
