From 'supply teachers' to 'it all went Pete Tong' - the Tim Sherwood quotes that made Tottenham fans cringe

Straight talker: But Sherwood's style was not always appreciated
Standard Sport13 May 2014

It's fair to say that Tim Sherwood's self-styled 'shoot from the hip' approach to dealing with the media did not always go down well with Spurs fans.

With the 45 year-old on his way out of White Hart Lane after being sacked this week, Standard Sport look back at the comments made by Sherwood which had even the most loyal Spurs fans cringeing.

On the standard of the Tottenham squad:

'Are there any world class Gareth Bale-type players (in the Tottenham squad)? No, there are not.'

On Hugo Lloris a week later

'He is a top-drawer goalkeeper - a genuine world-class player'

On Tottenham fans:

'Liverpool are a different kettle of fish to us; home-grown players at Liverpool are embraced. They love homegrown players at Liverpool. Tottenham fans like signings.

On his win record:

‘I’ve got a 59 per cent win ratio in the Premier League and I think if I had started the season in charge we’d be in the Champions League.’

On Gareth Bale's exit:

‘We’re taking out one of the best players in the world and replacing him with seven players who have never played in this competition before. How on earth did people think we would be title challengers or even make the top four?’

On watching his team lose 4-0 at Anfield from the stand:

“I have sat up there for the last few games and I get a better view of the game.

On his standing in the dressing room:

‘If you have a supply teacher who comes into your school, sometimes they’re not treated with the respect that a headmaster is.’

On his public criticism of the players:

‘They’re all men, they know I’m saying it from the heart, not from a script, but on impulse. I shoot from the hip.’

On choosing his best XI:

‘I couldn’t tell you my best team, and I don’t know whether that’s good or bad. I have assessed the players more than anyone and I could not tell you the best 11 at Tottenham. They are all so similar; much of a muchness regarding quality.’

On the speculation over his job:

‘At every press conference, it was “you’re keeping the seat warm for someone else”. Yeah, I am but the seat’s getting quite hot. Every press conference I do it’s “this manager’s coming in - Van Gaal … then Hoddle, this one and that one.” Some of these managers are actually touting themselves for my job."

On losing 4-0 to Chelsea:

"It all went Pete Tong after half time didn't it?"
