Frank Lampard wants Everton to be inspired by their “glorious” history in the FA Cup to kickstart his managerial reign with a win.

The Toffees welcome Brentford to Goodison Park on Saturday with more than just a place in the fifth-round up for grabs, as new boss Lampard looks to bring some positivity back to the blue half of Merseyside.

“I don't want to make too many drastic statements about the Brentford game or the Newcastle game [on Tuesday] because we have to work," he told reporters on Friday.

“But I've been very impressed with the players and the lift I've sensed in the last few days of training.

“The next step from that is definitely results and what could be better than Goodison, with the atmosphere that I'm sure we'll get on Saturday, and the opportunity to get into the next round of a cup that the club has a glorious history of?

“I know it's not as recent as we'd like but with the talent we've got we want to go as far as we can in this cup, and then we want to be able to carry on that momentum. So it's a big game for us in that sense.”

Everton won the last of their five FA Cup trophies in 1995, but have made the final just once since - a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea which saw Blues hero Lampard score the winner.

Despite signing on transfer deadline day, Dele Alli and Donny van de Beek will not be available to face Brentford due to being cup-tied. Dominic Calvert-Lewin will miss the game through injury.
