Harry Redknapp has joined Championship side Derby County as a football advisor until the end of the season, the club have announced.

The 69-year-old Standard Sport columnist will take up his new role with immediate effect, and will help manager Darren Wassall until the end of the current campaign.

Speaking about the appointment, Derby chairman Mel Morris said: "It is excellent news that Harry has agreed to join us. His experience spans over several decades and he is one of the most knowledgeable and informed figures in the game.

"When I spoke with Harry about the possibility of helping out on a short-term basis, it was evident from the start that he was excited at the prospect of joining us. I am sure he will perfectly complement Darren and the rest of our staff."

The 69-year-old told the club's official website: "From the first conversation I had with the Chairman it was clear he has exciting plans for the football club. I am delighted to be able to help out and am looking forward to working with Darren and his team."

While assisting Derby coach Wassall, Redknapp will also manage, albeit temporarily, the Jordan national team after being asked by close friend Prince Ali to oversee their next two qualifiers against Bangladesh and Australia.

Speaking about his decision to take on the role, Redknapp said: "It’s going to be a tough couple of weeks, that’s for sure.

"I’m friends with Prince Ali and wanted him to take over from Sepp Blatter. He asked me if I’d manage the team for a couple of matches and I agreed.

"I’ll go to the Forest game and then go straight to London and fly to Jordan.

"It’s a busy time but I’ve missed the buzz of being involved in football."
