The Crystal Palace fans without tickets who caused chaos at Brighton on Tuesday were today criticised by the Football Supporters’ Federation.

It comes after Sussex Police called the disorder at the Amex Stadium a “return to the dark days of football”.

A steward suffered three fractured ribs when a number of Palace fans without tickets stormed a turnstile to force their way into the away end.

Flares were let off and many fans with tickets were denied entry to the match after the police closed the gates because the incident had caused a safety issue. The supporters’ group said: “There is no excuse for such behaviour and the FSF condemns these actions. We are concerned at the number of ordinary, peaceful fans who are saying they had tickets but were denied entry. They deserve answers.

“Many are Crystal Palace fans with tickets who fear they will suffer the consequences of such behaviour.”

Chief Inspector Simon Nelson of Sussex Police said: “I have never come across such concerted attempts to cause disorder and engage in violent behaviour.”
