Mohamed Salah named in final three for FIFA’s The Best award after Ballon d’Or snub

Mohamed Salah will compete with Robert Lewandowski and Lionel Messi for FIFA’s The Best award after the final shortlist was announced.

The Liverpool star finished seventh in the voting for the prestigious 2021 Ballon d’Or prize, which was won by Messi despite many fans expecting Lewandowski to take the trophy.

‘The Best’ differs in being partially voted for by fans, which a public vote holding 25 per cent of the sway alongside input from national team coaches, captains and media representatives from around the world.

On Friday, it was announced that Salah, Messi and Lewandowski are in the final three for the January 17 ceremony. Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe and Jorginho were among those nominated in the longlist who miss out.

Lewandowski won the 2020 award ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi, who claimed the gong the year before.

In the Best Women’s Player category, Chelsea striker Sam Kerr joins Barcelona duo Alexia Putellas and Jenni Hermoso. Putellas won the Ballon d’Or Feminin and is the favourite for this award too.

Chelsea are also represented in the Best Women’s Coach category by Emma Hayes with Thomas Tuchel up against Pep Guardiola and Roberto Mancini for the Men’s Coach award.
