Fifa 18 release date confirmed with Cristiano Ronaldo as cover star

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo has been named Fifa's cover star for the first time in his career.

The Portuguese breaks Lionel Messi's run as the poster boy for the world's biggest-selling football video game, with the Barcelona rival making the cover in four of the past five years.

Borussia Dortmund's Marco Reus adorned the Fifa 17 cover, the most recent edition currently on sale in which Ronaldo is the highest-rating player with 94 compared to Messi's 93.

The announcement comes just days after Ronaldo scored two goals to help Real Madrid become the first team to retain the Champions League trophy since the competition's revamping in 1992.

"It is a real pleasure to be on the cover of FIFA 18. It’s a great feeling and I am grateful to have been chosen," Ronaldo said in a statement.

Fifa 18 will be released on September 29 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Ronaldo becomes the third player to grace the cover of Fifa and Pro Evolution Soccer having been front and centre for the 2008, 2012 and 2013 editions of Konami's rival series.

Thierry Henry was also picked for both Fifa and PES before Messi for Konami's choice in 2009, 2010 and 2011.
