The Football Association have been forced to apologise after a post from one of their official Twitter accounts about the England Women's team's appearance was heavily criticised for being "sexist".

A photo uploaded to the '@Lionesses' account showed the England team line up before their match against Australia Women on Tuesday with the caption: "Scrub up well, don’t they?"

A number of users on Twitter reacted angrily to the tweet, accusing the FA of treating the women's team differently to the men's squad.

Others outright accused the FA of being "sexist" and questioned the relevance of the description to the team, with many referring to the outdated nature of the post.

An FA spokesperson confirmed they had removed the tweet on Wednesday and released an official apology, which read: "We have removed the tweet and apologise for any offence caused."

It is the latest social media gaffe from the FA after their official account singled out England striker Harry Kane in April after his club Tottenham lost 2-1 in the FA semi-final to Manchester United.

Things didn't go much better on the pitch either as Phil Neville's side were frustrated after being held 1-1 and the coach himself criticised the refereeing the game after being denied what he thought were two clear penalties.
