Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard has “a lot of love and respect” for his former boss David Moyes, but admits Roberto Martinez’s appointment was “refreshing”.

Howard, 35, spent seven years under Scotsman Moyes at Goodison Park before the manager left for his ill-fated tenure at Manchester United in 2013.

It was Moyes who brought the USA international to Everton, first on-loan and then permanently.

“Moyes was brilliant for me and my hat goes off to him for what he did in his 11 years here,” Howard told Bleacher Report. “I have a lot of love and respect for David Moyes.”

But the goalkeeper admits he was refreshed by the arrival of Moyes’ successor, Roberto Martinez, and the management style he brought with him.

“Roberto has come into the club with ideas and confidence, which is not something that is easy to do because he inherited a bunch of players without a mass exodus,” Howard said.

“There was an immediate fusion of ideas and respect, and you can see that in results on the pitch.

“You get to 34 and think you’ve seen it all, but along came Roberto with different ideas, and it was refreshing.”

Everton currently occupy 10th place in the Premier League table, level on points with rivals Liverpool and seven points off the Champions League spots.
