An Everton player has been placed in self-isolation after a player reported symptoms consistent with coronavirus.

In a statement, the club confirmed they are “monitoring the wellbeing of all players and staff” having taken precautionary measures.

The Toffees’ Finch Farm training base, home ground of Goodison Park, and city-centre offices at the Royal Liver Building have all been closed.

The same goes for the club’s retail store situated next to Goodison, though its Liverpool One store remains unaffected.

The news was delivered three days before Everton were scheduled to host Merseyside rivals Liverpool in the Premier League, but all matches have since been suspended.

Everton initially appeared to suggest the entire first-team squad was in self-isolation, but later clarified the situation in a second statement.

It said: "To clarify our earlier statement, Everton Football Club can confirm that one member of the Everton first-team squad reported a high temperature last night and is now undertaking a period of self-isolation for seven days."
