Dean Saunders is likely to be relieved after hearing the news that Birmingham Airport will waive his hefty parking fine and instead ask him to give his money to a charity of his choice.

The former Wales striker has been working as a football pundit at the European Championships for BBC but, believing his nation would be eliminated early from the tournament in France, he left his car at Birmingham's short-stay car park before departing the country.

Airport bosses initially said they would scrap his parking fine if Wales won the competition but, after Chris Coleman's side were knocked out by Portugal at the semi-final stage on Wednesday, Birmingham Airport have now said they will ask Saunders to donate his money to charity rather than pay the fine.

Chief Executive of Birmingham Airport, Paul Kehoe, told ITV News Central: "I think Wales have done us proud as a country. We're delighted for the Welsh team.

"Shame they lost last night but Dean, don't worry about the fee. If you've snuck back in and you've paid it, we'll donate the money to charity.

"If not, please donate it to a charity of your choice."

One Wales fan even set up a fundraising page on Just Giving to help towards the cost of the fine.

Richard Jackson started the campaign to raise £200, and has so far received £53.

Wales' elimination from Euro 2016 marked the end of a fairytale journey for Coleman's men, with the tournament being the nation's first major finals since 1958.

In getting to the last four, where goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani secured a 2-0 win for Portugal, Wales reached their farthest-ever stage in a football competition.
