England Under-21s defied Fifa's poppy ban during their 3-2 friendly win over Italy at St. Mary's on Thursday evening.

The game's governing body earlier this month stood by their decision to ban poppies from players kit amid pressure from the home nations, citing their law that no 'commercial, political or religious messages' should be displayed on team jerseys.

Despite the threat of sanctions, The FA have since said the England senior team will ignore the poppy ban during thier World Cup qualifier against Scotland at Wembley on Friday and intend to wear the symbol of remembrance on black armbands.

And the Under-21s paved the way for Gareth Southgate's side to resist the ruling by themselves showing no regard for Fifa's warnings during their meeting with the Azzurri on the south coast, marking Armistice Day with the red flower on a separate black band.

Jack Stephens scored a stoppage-time winner as the Young Lions continued their preparations for the 2017 European Championship with a dramatic 3-2 win .

The result extended the Young Lions' undefeated run to 15 fixtures, and came in the first of three scheduled friendlies before next summer's tournament in Poland.

Interim head coach Boothroyd made six changes from his most recent line-up - surprisingly resting striker Tammy Abraham but perhaps wisely experimenting given Jordan Pickford's recent call-up to the senior squad - and was rewarded as they came from behind to secure another victory.

The decision to defy Fifa over poppies came as Wales announced their intention to fall in line with the governing body over the issue.

Chris Coleman's side will wear plain black armbands in their World Cup qualifier against Serbia on Saturday to avoid the risk of a fine or the more severe punishment of a World Cup points deduction.
