England’s players took a knee ahead of Thursday’s game against San Marino at Wembley.

There had been discussions over whether or not they would continue with the pre-kick-off gesture, though Fifa did give permission earlier this week.

Players, staff and officials across English football and beyond have taken a knee before kick-off in matches to support the fight against racism and back the Black Lives Matter movement following the death of George Floyd in the United States in May 2020.

However, some teams and players - including Scotland - have now stopped the gesture, with many feeling that the message has become diluted or lost its meaning.

England’s players discussed the issue at a team meeting on Wednesday night, with Aston Villa duo Tyrone Mings and Ollie Watkins among those that still believe that taking a knee sends a powerful anti-racism message.

"We're going to take the knee,” Southgate confirmed to ITV ahead of the meeting with San Marino.

"I think we're unanimous on the bigger issues. We're a very tight team and we are conscious that there's a little bit of a perception that perhaps the impact is waning a bit.

"But we don't see a better way of broaching the issue at the moment and we feel it's important as a country that they see our national football team united."
