England player ratings vs Italy: Heroes fall at final hurdle in Euros final

Football has not come home as England were beaten by Italy in the Euro 2020 Final.

Here’s how James Robson rated those on show at Wembley...

Jordan Pickford 8

Brilliant save denied Chiesa and he did his best to prevent Italy’s equaliser when turning Veratti’s header onto the post before Bonucci fired in the rebound.

Kyle Walker 8

Right back, centre back – put him wherever you want, he remains equally formidable. Worrying moment when beaten by Emerson in extra time, but otherwise hugely impressive. Really good battle with Chiesa.

John Stones 8

A towering performance from a player who has grown into the tournament. Got his body in the way of so many Italy moves. More known for his cultured football, but this was good old fashioned stoic defending.

Harry Maguire 8

Unusually nervy start for one of England’s players of the tournament, but quickly settled. Perfect positioning and dominant when Italy got the ball near to the box and tried to force England further up the pitch with his runs.

Kieran Trippier 7

Set up Shaw’s goal and got into so much space on the right to hurt Italy. Felt like an ideal game for him as he crunched into tackles and left a little bit extra in when necessary.

Declan Rice 7

Important interceptions in and around the edge of the England box cut out some of Italy’s more dangerous moments.

Kalvin Phillips 8

Clearly told to detail Veratti and chased the Italy playmaker everywhere to try to curb his influence. He could not completely silence him, but it was an important role for England. Boundless energy to keep getting himself in the way of Italy.

Luke Shaw 8

Just keeps on proving his doubters wrong. Started the move that led to his goal to send Wembley into raptures. His powerful charges down the left battered Italy into retreat.

Mason Mount 7

Preferred to the more thrilling options Southgate had and he was important in chasing and pressing Italy, without adding enough of a goal threat.

Raheem Sterling 7

Less influential than he has been. Had his moments when running at the Italy defence, but did not test the pace of Bonucci and Chiellini enough.

Harry Kane 7

Dropped deep, as expected in the face of Italy’s wily centre backs. Some clever balls opened up the defence, but never looked likely to add to his tally of goals.

Bukayo Saka (Trippier, 71) 5

Almost had his shirt ripped off his back by Chiellini, such was the panic he had the veteran defender in when about to race away in stoppage time.

Jordan Henderson (Rice, 74) 6

England probably needed his energy before Italy’s equaliser. Did a good job helping to get a bit more control of midfield – especially in extra time.

Jack Grealish (Mount, 99) 5

After becoming the fans’ icon of this tournament it felt like this could be his moment to truly stamp his name on it. Worried Italy by running with the ball, but was kept at arm’s length.

Marcus Rashford (Henderson, 120) N/A

Brought on to take a penalty as Southgate ended the game with half a team of forwards.

Jadon Sancho (Walker, 120) N/A

Also brought on for the shoot-out.
