England manager Roy Hodgson challenges Luke Shaw to stake World Cup claim against Denmark

England boss Roy Hodson believes the upcoming friendly against Denmark is Luke Shaw’s chance to stake his claim for a place on the plane to Brazil this summer.

The 18-year-old defender received his first England call-up for the match at Wembley next Wednesday and is battling with Ashley Cole and Leighton Baines for the left-back spot at the World Cup.

The sensational club form Shaw has shown at Southampton earned the left-back a call-up and Hodgson believes the youngster deserves his place in the 30-man squad.

“Everyone who has watched him play recently will not deny he deserves a place in a large squad like this. He’s played very well, we think he’s an exciting talent.

“I think it was the right moment to invite him along with us because we are very well off in the left full-back position but he is a player who wants to compete with the other two [Cole and Baines] for a place on the plane to Brazil. I thought this was the right time to bring him in and give him a chance to show what he can do.”

Hodgson also heaped praise on Liverpool’s form this season and thinks 19-year-old Raheem Sterling is in the form of his career after the Jamaican-born forward also earned a call-up.

“Liverpool have been fantastic, they’ve played brilliantly well and have been devastating with their attacking play.

“Raheem is a player I know from Liverpool but after bursting into the team and doing very well he disappeared for a while but it’s great to see him back now stronger than ever.”
