England manager Roy Hodgson has five games and 83 days to finalise his thoughts ahead of Euro 2016.

His latest squad convened at St George’s Park this morning ahead of the next brace of friendlies — against world champions Germany on Saturday and Holland three days later — as the scramble for places in this summer’s final 23 intensifies.

These high-profile matches were originally designed with the intention of testing Hodgson’s first-choice XI against the best to identify strengths and weaknesses away from the spotlight of tournament football.

But one of the knock-on effects of such an unpredictable Premier League season is the enhanced international credentials of previously unheralded individuals - especially given the title runs of Leicester and Tottenham.

That in turn creates intriguing selection dilemmas in areas where injuries have restricted Hodgson’s options.
