England Euro 2016 squad: Six key decisions Roy Hodgson faces

Simon Johnson30 March 2016

With England's final two friendlies out of the way before Roy Hodgson names his Euro 2016 squad, players in key areas have had a last chance to stake a claim to a place on the plane come June.

Those who played against Germany have undoubtedly made the strongest case. Tottenham’s young players gained most with Dele Alli named man of the match, while Harry Kane and Eric Dier got their names on the scoresheet.

At the back Spurs’ Danny Rose also did well and Leicester’s Jamie Vardy continued his fairytale season by bagging England’s second.

The stunning fightback from 2-0 down to win 3-2 against the reigning world champions rightly boosted morale among players and fans, but both camps were rudely brought back down to earth on Tuesday with defeat to Netherlands.

It was a markedly more disjointed performance with few clear cut chances and mistakes at the back.

Everton’s John Stones has been singled out for criticism for a slip which led to a goal.

Danny Drinkwater, in imperious form for Leicester, didn’t have as much of an impact on the game as he would have liked despite being named man of the match.

Arsenal’s England contingent fared much worse than their north London rivals with Theo Walcott only afforded 20 minutes to impress Hodgson.
