'Ed Woodward: A specialist in failure': Manchester United fans fly protest plane over Burnley's Turf Moor

Manchester United fans turned on Ed Woodward at Sunday’s must-win game against Burnley.

Supporters hired a plane to fly above Turf Moor, with the message: ‘Ed Woodward - A Specialist in Failure.’

It was evidence of the growing discontent among the club’s following, who believe the executive vice chairman undermined Jose Mourinho by failing to back him in the transfer market in the summer.

Mourinho was desperate to sign a top class centre back and a right winger during the transfer window as he looked to mount a genuine Premier League title challenge this season.

But Woodward vetoed moves for Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld and Jerome Boateng over concerns of the value of the trio.

Mourinho was also keen to sign Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic - only to miss out on the Croatian World Cup star for the second summer in succession.

Fred was the only major signing this summer - arriving in a £52m deal from Shakhtar Donetsk.

Mourinho also signed Portuguese prospect Diogo Dalot and third choice goalkeeper Lee Grant.

The United manager has made little secret of his frustration in the transfer market and Sunday’s protest was evidence fans are backing him over Woodward, with applause from the away end in response to the plane.
