Demba Ba: Winning cups means more than top-four finish

Qualifying for the Champions League would not ease Demba Ba’s disappointment after failing to win a trophy in his first season at Chelsea.

Ba joined from Newcastle in January but is cup-tied in the Europa League, so his hopes of a first winners’ medal at Stamford Bridge disappeared when Chelsea lost in the semi-finals of the League Cup and FA Cup.

Chelsea are on course to return to the Champions League but when asked whether finishing in the top four would feel like winning a trophy, Ba said: “No. Why would I want to celebrate that? No. I want a medal. I just hope I’m going to win some trophies because we talk about it a lot but in the end it’s zero so far. It’s not that I want to be in the pictures around the stadium or at the training ground, I just want to feel what it’s like to win.

“It’s hard [being cup-tied] but I don’t regret playing in the early rounds with Newcastle. I am happy I helped them the way I could.

“I want Chelsea to win it because it will give us confidence and have a positive effect on the League.

“It’s important to finish in the top four and play Champions League football next season. I have never played it and only watched it on TV. I have always said to myself I’d love to play in it one day.”
