Dean Smith was angered by Brentford’s performance as they were knocked out of the EFL Cup 3-1 by Norwich.

Brentford pulled a goal back late on through Josh Clarke but it was one they barely deserved.

Mario Vrancic gave the visitors the lead with a 10th-minute penalty after debutant Chris Mepham was harshly judged to have tripped Marley Watkins.

Brentford then wasted a chance to equalise when Yoann Barbet’s penalty almost cleared the stand after Kamohelo Mokotjo had been fouled. Norwich took control after the break and further goals from Vrancic and Josh Murphy infuriated Smith, who had made seven changes to his starting line‑up.

“I expected more from them, especially in the second half,” said the Brentford boss.

“The lads solved the problems in the first half, got better as the half went on and probably finished it the stronger.

“In the second half we hoped to come out strongly but they scored five minutes into the second half. After that it was a very insipid performance.”
