Self-styled Aston Villa supporter David Cameron has blamed his gaffe, in which he mixed up the Birmingham-based club with West Ham, on cricket.

The Prime Minister was forced to apologise after calling on voters to support West Ham during a speech.

But in an interview with the Bimingham Mail, the Tory leader said he mixed up his words because he was thinking of the West Indies cricket team.

“I want to say how sorry I am,” Cameron told the paper.

“All I can explain is I went past the West Ham stadium the day before and I just said the word West Indies in my speech and I was making a point about the cricket Test and all the rest of it.

“I meant to say Aston Villa and I am profoundly embarrassed.”

The PM sparked a social media frenzy when he made the initial error during a speech on diversity.

He described Britain as a place, “where you can support Man United, the Windies and Team GB at the same time. “Of course, I’d rather you supported West Ham.”
