David Beckham is asked to join England's World Cup squad

World Cup invite: David Beckham
11 April 2012

England coach Fabio Capello today said he had invited David Beckham to join his World Cup squad in South Africa, even though the injured midfielder will play no part on the field.

Beckham tore an Achilles tendon playing for AC Milan on Sunday and will need at least six months to recover, ruling him out of the month-long tournament that starts on 11 June.

But the 34-year-old could still have a role to play with the team, should he accept Capello's offer.

"We have asked Beckham to come to South Africa with us," said the Italian.

"It depends on him and how his tendon injury is. It's obvious he won't be able to play because we have to wait six months."

After sustaining the injury in Milan's 1-0 win over Chievo, the former Manchester United star flew to Finland for surgery before starting his rehabilitation.

Milan have said Beckham's rehab plan should lead to a complete recovery, after which he will be able to play again.
