Danny Murphy: It is time for £30m Moussa Sissoko to prove his worth to Tottenham

I can understand why Tottenham signed a player with Moussa Sissoko’s attributes, but for £30 million the numbers simply do not add up.

For that price, you need to be a key player, chipping in with goals and assists so you finish the season with at least 10 of each.

As it stands, Sissoko has made 14 league appearances, has provided two assists and has yet to score.

Sissoko is talented, athletic and can go past people. He has shown a wonderful ability to travel huge distances with the ball and open teams up.

But in English football, he hasn’t played well enough, regularly enough, to make me believe he can deliver every week.

Mauricio Pochettino must have believed in his own coaching ability to make Sissoko better and more consistent.

But he looks like a nervy player who is affected by being in and out of the team.

Perhaps Pochettino could try something different, give Sissoko a platform and the time he needs to show what he can do.

It is very clear, though, what is Tottenham’s strongest XI. They have decent back-up in defence, and also in midfield, where I have been impressed by the performances of young Harry Winks.

But they don’t have the same attacking options on the bench as other sides, and rely too much on Harry Kane and Dele Alli.

They have contributed 24 of their 45 league goals this season – 53 per cent. More is needed from their team-mates if they are to sustain a title challenge.
