Dagenham are revelling in their 'pub team' image

Back of the net: Paul Benson chalked up 21 goals last season

Having spent a long time in the shadows of West Ham and Leyton Orient, Dagenham & Redbridge are beginning to make a name for themselves.

Dagenham have taken League Two by storm, amassing 12 points out of a possible 15 ahead of tomorrow's trip to Cheltenham.

The season is still in its infancy but already it appears the club could surpass last season's achievement, when they finished eighth and were only denied a play-off berth by a home defeat by Shrewsbury on the final day.

Striker Paul Benson chalked up 21 goals last season and has already netted five times this term.

"The manager John Still plays on the 'pub team' image quite a lot but we know we're better than that," he said. "There are some big teams in this league - Notts County, Bradford and so on - but we can take them on and not be overawed."
