Cut-price Mido still has value, says Gianfranco Zola

Mido: the Egypt striker has chosen to resurrect his career by signing for West Ham in a £1,000-per-week deal

Gianfranco Zola has seen signs that Mido is ready to prove he still has a future at the top level.

The Egypt striker has chosen to resurrect his career by signing for West Ham in a £1,000-per-week deal rather than stay at Championship club Middlesbrough where the 26-year-old was picking up £50,000 a week.

It is understood Zola has told Mido that he is currently behind Carlton Cole, Benni McCarthy, Ilan and, when fit again, Guillermo Franco in the strikers' pecking order. However, the West Ham boss says the former Tottenham man is not perturbed.

"We know Mido has qualities," said Zola.

"It is up to him now, how much he wants to play at the highest level. He knows the position here, he knows it won't be easy to break into the team but from what I have seen in the first few days training it looks like he is determined to prove himself.

"In our team the player who deserves most to play, will play. If he proves himself better than the others, he will be in the team."
