Cuneyt Cakir given backing by UEFA over Nani red card

7 March 2013

Referee Cuneyt Cakir has been backed by UEFA following his controversial decision to show Manchester United midfielder Nani a red card in last night's Champions League defeat at the hands of Real Madrid.

Uefa said they have "no problem" with the under-fire Turkish referee and confirmed he will remain on its list of officials to take charge of further Champions League matches this season.

A spokesman said: "We have no problem with him. "There are no issues for us regarding the sending off and we will wait for the official reports of the match delegate and the referee's observer, as is procedure. If they raise concerns then we will act."

Cakir dismissed Nani for his waist high challenge on Alvaro Arbeloa.

At the time of the incident United were leading 2-1 on aggregate, but eventually lost the match 3-2.
