Luka Milivojevic rescued a point for Crystal Palace against Newcastle in a crunch game in the fight against relegation in the Premier League.

Milivojevic scored from the spot to equalise in the second half after Mohamed Diame had put Newcastle ahead in the first half.

The draw leaves Palace 14th in the Premier League and three points above the bottom three.

Palace had chances to win the game late on and Newcastle defender Ciaran Clark cleared off the line in the final five minutes to deny them.

Roy Hodgson had to settle for point and this felt like a missed opportunity at home for Palace ahead of a tough run of games.

They face former Eagles manager Sam Allardyce and his Everton side next weekend and then play Tottenham, Manchester United and Chelsea.

Palace went behind against Newcastle after 22 minutes.

On-loan Chelsea defender Kenedy whipped in a low left-footed corner from the right that missed everyone at the front post and Diame poked home unmarked at the back post.

It was a bad goal for Palace to concede. The ball went through a number of Palace players who failed to clear and Diame lost his marker.

Newcastle almost doubled their lead on 32 minutes but for a superb double save from Wayne Hennessey. Kenedy cut in front left and forced Hennessey in a stop and the Palace goalkeeper then kept out the follow up from Ayoze Perez.

Palace struggled in the first half but Wilfried Zaha was close to drawing them level just before the break. Zaha created space inside the area and his shot was deflected off two Newcastle defenders before Darlow made a wonderful reflex save to keep Newcastle in front.

The Eagles then saw Martin Kelly limp off with what looked like a hamstring strain and Mamadou Sakho came on for his first appearance since the start of December.

Palace improved at the start of the second half and they equalised after 55 minutes when Milivojevic scored from the penalty spot after Benteke had his shirt pulled by Clark.

Darlow got a good hand to the ball but he could not keep it out and Palace were level.

Palace then went in search for a second - Benteke directed a header off target, Yohan Cabaye fired a over and Zaha jinked past three Newcastle defenders but could not get a shot off.

Palace continued to push and were getting closer when James McArthur shot inches over the crossbar and Zaha then curled over from inside the area.

Newcastle somehow survived with five minutes to go when Clark blocked an effort on the line and then denied Benteke after a desperate scramble inside the six-yard box.

From the resulting corner Palace wanted a penalty for another shirt pull but referee Andre Marriner gave nothing as the home side were frustrated.
