Crystal Palace’s redevelopment of Selhurst Park moved a step closer last night, after the club’s updated planning application received unanimous approval.

The plans, which will see capacity increase from 26,000 to more than 34,000, were initially given the green light by Croydon Council more than four years ago, with a rebuilt Main Stand scheduled to open in time for the 2021-22 campaign.

However, work is still yet to begin, following a series of delays during the pandemic and changes to planning regulations in the intervening years requiring Palace to make a number of minor alterations.

In July, chairman Steve Parish reaffirmed the club’s commitment to the £100million project, and the new plans have now been given the go-ahead. The club must still agree deals to purchase six homes on nearby Wooderson Close, as well as a piece of land owned by Sainsbury’s, before work can commence.

“I’d like to thank Croydon Council for their continued support for the stadium redevelopment, which will bring substantial investment into the borough, as well as breathing new life into Selhurst Park,” Parish said.
