Roy Hodgson believes Wilfried Zaha’s decision to speak about a perceived lack of protection from referees affected his performance against Newcastle on Saturday.

Zaha was subdued as Crystal Palace were held to a 0-0 draw a week after the forward said he felt he would need to have his leg broken before an opponent was shown a red card.

“Wilf was quiet,” said Hodgson. “I fear that was of his own making to some extent. It was not a good week for him with all the discussions over the interview.

“I think that was the quietest I have seen him for a long time, and that is disappointing because Wilf in high form might have been the difference.

“He said what was on his mind, in his heart. I think he has paid for it a little bit [on Saturday] because he was much quieter and subdued than in the past. But one should not be criticised for saying what is on their mind.”
