Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says Cristiano Ronaldo will be 'absolutely gutted' that his goal against Manchester United will not be dominating the headlines this morning.

The Juventus forward, signed from Real Madrid for £100million over the summer as the Italian giants pursue European glory, scored his first Champions League goal for his new club against his former employers in Turin on Wednesday.

The top scorer in the history of the competition put the hosts ahead with an outstanding first time volley past David De Gea, before United turned the tide and won it late on following a Juan Mata free kick and an own goal.

"It is such a fantastic goal, it surprises us all, we have seen so many games but we're still surprised because he does the unexpected," Wenger said on Bein Sports.

"He has a short backlift, it doesn't take him time to hit the ball and even the keeper didn't move, De Gea has fantastic reactions but even he didn't lift a hand.

"He [Ronaldo] will go home tonight, believe me, absolutely gutted because a goal like that will not be highlighted because they lost the game. This goal, with a 1-0 victory, would have been all over the world tomorrow."
