Watford defender Craig Cathcart has signed a new four-year contract at Vicarage Road.

The club signed Will Hughes from Derby County for £8million earlier this week, and have tied down 28-year-old Cathcart to a new deal as new head coach Marco Silva continues to shape his squad for next season.

The Northern Ireland international struggled with injury last season, managing just 15 Premier League appearances, but has become a key player since joining on a free transfer from Blackpool in 2014.

The deal caps a fine week for the Hornets following the arrival of highly-rated midfielder Hughes, who said: “I’m massively excited.

"When it first came out that I was linked, I spoke to my agent and it's been a slow process but I'm very relieved now.

"I've played against Watford many a time in the Championship and I've always enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to a new challenge now, especially in the Premier League."
