Chris Powell gets lucky break

Ian Gibb11 April 2012

Maybe Chris Powell is a lucky manager as well as an excellent prospect as a new boss.

He needed all the good fortune going for Charlton to beat Colchester 1-0 after one of the most bizarre disallowed goals.

Referee Darren Sheldrake first chalked off Steve Gillespie's goal for Colchester because of a foul by Dave Mooney.

After consulting his assistant, Sheldrake gave the goal but Charlton protests then resulted in the referee disallowing it again.

Powell said: "I haven't seen anything like that in all my years. But I feel the referee made the right decision."

Bradley Wright-Phillips marked his debut after signing from Plymouth with a spectacular overhead winner that Powell hailed as "good enough to grace the Premier League".
