Chinese bid for Matthew Upson

11 April 2012

Matthew Upson is a target for Shanghai Shenhua, the Chinese club that signed Nicolas Anelka from Chelsea last month.

The Super League side also claim talks are ongoing to take Chelsea striker Didier Drogba to Asia.

Shenhua official Ma Yue told Reuters today that his club are in talks with former England defender Upson but declined to give a timeline for the negotiations with the 32-year-old Stoke centre-back.

Shenhua have already turned heads in recent months by signing former France striker Anelka and appointing his compatriot Jean Tigana as coach.

And Ma refused to rule out the additions of Upson and Drogba. He said: "Nothing is confirmed. We are still in the midst of discussions."

Drogba's contract with Chelsea expires at the end of June.
