Shanghai SIPG general manager Sui Guoyang believes the club would have failed in their pursuit of Chelsea midfielder Oscar had the Chinese Super League outfit not bid a mammoth £60m for the Brazilian.

Oscar will join Shanghai at the beginning of the January transfer window after the club offered Chelsea £60m for the 25-year-old while the player is believed to be set to earn about £500,000 a week in China.

Chelsea coach Antonio Conte warned in December that the wealth of Chinese clubs could pose a threat for top European sides as they attempt to lure big-name stars to the country.

And Shanghai's general manager Sui Guoyang has admitted that it was the huge financial offer that the club tempted both Chelsea and Oscar with that led to the deal being agreed.

"If we don't offer £60 million, do you think he will bother to come?" he said.

"There's such a huge gap between CSL and Europe's top leagues. It's unrealistic to suggest that we would have done it in a different way.

"The cost of signing the player was €60m indeed, not £60m. The club's senior management personally flew to Paris to seal the deal."
