Chelsea have opened talks with starlet Mason Mount over a new contract and are confident the midfielder will commit his long-term future to Stamford Bridge.

As Standard Sport revealed last week, the impending appointment of Frank Lampard as Chelsea’s new manager has persuaded the club’s best youngsters to sign new deals.

As reported last month, Callum Hudson-Odoi is set to announce a new five-year deal worth £100,000-a-week.

Meanwhile, Ruben Loftus-Cheek is also about to put pen-to-paper on an extension worth £150,000-a-week – despite being ruled out for the rest of the year with a ruptured Achilles tendon.

Now Standard Sport has learned that the Chelsea hierarchy have reached out to Mount, who impressed while on loan at Derby under Lampard last term.

The midfielder is currently away on holiday having played for England at the European Under-21s Championships last month, but the club made their intentions clear before he went away.

Negotiations are expected to step up when he returns for pre-season training later in July and, with Lampard at the helm, Mount is keen to stay on.

He currently has two years remaining on his current contract, but Chelsea will want to tie him down until 2024.

Mount joined Chelsea at the age of six and has been regarded as one of the best players to come out of the academy in recent years.

In 2017-18, the 20-year-old starred for Vitesse Arnhem on a season-long loan and ended up being named the Dutch club’s player of the year.

He built on that success at Derby in the last campaign, with his form earning him a first call-up to the senior England side for their Uefa Nations League games against Croatia and Spain in October.

It is understood that Mount was always intending to try and make it into Chelsea’s senior squad this summer before they made a move for Lampard.

But he is even more optimistic about being able to make an impact for Chelsea with his idol, as well as assistant Jody Morris, taking charge and is keen to reach a new agreement to remain at the club for many more seasons.
