Chelsea 1 Liverpool 0: Gary Cahill goal hands Antonio Conte’s side victory despite Cesc Fabregas red card

Gary Cahill’s header after ten minutes was proved enough as Chelsea defeated Liverpool 1-0 in the International Champions Cup in California.

Speaking to Standard Sport in the build-up to the game, Cahill admitted that he was keen to impress new England manager Sam Allardyce as soon as possible, and a winning goal in the club’s first all-Premier League clash of the season will not have gone unnoticed.

Nor will his side’s defensive display. Antonio Conte kept his back-four in situ for the whole 90 minutes.

The Blues took the lead after just 10 minutes when Cahill headed home Cesc Fabregas’ corner, in what proved to a feisty encounter.

Fabregas was sent off (71 minutes) for a lunging tackle on new Liverpool signing Ragnar Klavan, but Antonio Conte’s side held on to claim victory in the Pasadena Rose Bowl.

Cahill was also booked in the clash of the Premier League rivals, with Liverpool's Alberto Moreno, Ovie Ejaria, Marko Grujic, Dejan Lovren and Kevin Stewart also receiving yellow cards.

As well as Kavlan, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp gave starts to fellow recent arrivals Sadio Mane and Loris Karius in a match which was watched by more than 53,000 in California.

The closest his team came to a goal was in the 35th minute, when Roberto Firmino's effort was ruled out for offside.

Starting line-ups

Chelsea: Begovic; Azpilicueta, Cahill, Terry, Aina; Fabregas, Matic; Wilian, Traore, Loftus-Cheek, Moses

Liverpool: Karius, Randall, Lovren, Klavan, Moreno, Stewart, Ejaria, Grujic, Mane, Coutinho, Firmino
