Chelsea have made a shock £3.5million bid for New York Red Bulls centre half Matt Miazga as doubts emerge over Gary Cahill's future at the club.

Talks are so advanced over Miazga, who has just one year left on his contract with the MLS side, that sources in the USA suggest a deal could be completed before the weekend.

The highly-rated 20-year-old has a Polish passport and so will not require a work permit.

Chelsea's interest in Miazga emerged as reports broke of Cahill's unease at Stamford Bridge this afternoon.

Standard Sport wrote in December that the England centre back had cause to be worried about his position in the first team, just a week after signing a new four-year deal.

New manager Guus Hiddink has consistently preferred Kurt Zouma to partner captain John Terry at the back since replacing Jose Mourinho.

The 30-year-old is one of Chelsea's most successful players having won five major trophies, including the Champions League, Europa League and Premier League, since joining from Bolton for £7million four years ago.

But he has started just five games in the last two months and he is concerned about losing his England place at Euro 2016, which starts in June.
